A Feathered Wedding Theme

Feathers may be a surprising touch to consider at a wedding, yet they seem to have crept into every element of wedding planning over the past year or so.  From dresses to decorations, cakes to invitations.  Here are some of our favorite uses of plumage at a wedding.

The Dress

When it comes to feathers and wedding dresses, no one does it better than the French-Libyan designer, Elie Saab.  His couture gowns are always extravagant and glamorous, and have been worn by celebrities such as Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.  He is also a favorite designer for brides lucky enough to be planning a high end, luxury wedding in Europe.  His latest creation was for Rhianna at the Grammy awards.

If you aren't quite brave enough to have a feathery gown, add fancy feathers to your hair with one of these stunning fascinators by Advantage Bridal.

Invitations

I love this bold, colorful use of peacock feathers on the front of an invitation, as highlighted by Elle on her blog, Top Wedding Planning Tips

For a more subtle, traditional look, hot glue small, white feathers onto your invitations, or tie one or two to ribbons, alongside silver and white beads to create a sophisticatedtassel effect.

Flowers

Feathers can add texture and movement to your floral bouquet.  From daring plumes to delicate fronds, choose neutral, complimentary colors such as white for a subtle effect, or dare to be dramatic with bright reds or blacks.  Always ensure that the feathers are well secured in your bouquet, and trust your florist's judgement on choice of size, style and colors to make sure that the feathers don't get lost, or overpower the rest of your bouquet.

Favors

Feathers as favors?  Hm, so your guests may not appreciate a small bundle of feathers to take away as a token from your wedding, but you can buy gorgeous organza bags trimmed with feathers in which to put something a little more substantial.

Cake

Don't worry, this cake from Yummy Cakes isn't covered in real feathers, but the overall effect is beautiful and would really complement a feather theme.  Or you can opt for a feather and crystal cake topper, which adds pizazz and drama to the top of even the plainest of wedding cakes.

Decorations

Feathers are a great way to create a huge effect with even a tiny budget.  Huge plumes of ostrich feathers can be purchased online or at craft stores quite cheaply, and look amazing when placed in tall vases as centrepieces.  Decorating Studio have a great selection of types, sizes and colors. In this example, white vases and feathers have been paired with colored lights, creating an unusual and dreamy visual effect.

For a more rustic feel, add a few fluffy feathers to your floral arrangements, or place antiqued birdcages on the tables to create a centralized theme.

Wherever you choose to use them, feathers are sure to make a statement!
