Wedding Photography 102: Choosing the Perfect Photographer for You
Wedding photographers and their styles vary wildly so it is very important to check out a few and make sure you are happy with their work. If possible, arrange a meeting with a few to see how you get on- if you feel comfortable with your photographer, you will produce better photos so meeting a few helps you choose the one you get on with best.
Check out their portfolio to see the sort of style they work in. What kind of moments do they capture? What special effects do they prefer? Some photographers use a lot of post-production editing such as selective color (black and white photos with a dash of color) whereas others prefer to just touch up the photos minimally. It's important that your preferences match theirs.
You will also want to ask for some testimonials. If possible, don't rely on letters or testimonials from their website, but ask for the phone numbers of previous couples who can attest to their satisfaction with the photographer and his services.
Prepare a list of questions to ask every photographer and compare their answers. Some good examples of questions include:
- How much do you charge? (Photographers offer a wide range of packages, that include time, number of images taken, proofs, editing and prints. Take care to note the details of each package and decide on what is important to you in order to decide on which package offers the best value.)
- Do you have a set list of images you capture? (Some photographers will ONLY shoot to their list, while others may not have any list at all. Ideally you want to be able to express to the photographer which moments you envision having images of.)
- What is your vision? (Not all photographers see a wedding in the same way. Some like to focus on close up images, while others prefer to capture the interaction. Still others are inspired by lighting, and some by color or composition of a shot.)
- Do you require a meal/accommodation? (If your photographer is traveling from out of town, these may be additional costs to consider.)
- What is your cancellation policy? (It's always worth checking this out just in case!)
- Will you be taking the photographs, or an assistant? (Be sure the images that you see are taken by the same photographer who will be shooting your wedding, and not just another photographer within the studio.)
- How many people will be with you at the wedding? (Some work with multiple photographers and assistants which can be great for a bigger wedding, but crowded at a smaller more intimate venue.)
- What is your favorite thing about photographing weddings? (The answer to this informal question will often give you an insight into the photographer's passion for his or her work.)
Photographers are like the dress- when you find one, you will know they are right for your wedding. It may seem a lot of hassle to go to to find a photographer but if you choose carefully, these images will be cherished mementos for life: A memory framed, if you will.
