So far, the first three movies in our countdown of our Worst Wedding Movie Moments have included mob-enforced nuptials (The Marrying Man), out-and-out slaughter (Kill Bill Vol. 1), and Vince Vaughn’s usual antics (Old School). Included in our second installment are three wedding movies that just don't make inspire us to start reaching for the bridal magazines or brood over solitaire diamond rings. Overdone themes, boring scripts and a lack of originality that borders on insulting plague these three wedding movies...
7. Bride Wars. This one earns double qualification for our list due to both poor execution and horrendous wedding day events. Kate Hudson’s Liv Lerner and Anne Hathaway’s Emma Allen duel it out because, based on a clerical error, they’re both scheduled to be married on the same day in a location they’ve both dreamed of for years. Bridezilla attitudes emerge with few surprises. The wedding day itself presents one bride showing spring break footage of the other, the unduly exposed bride attacking the other while they’re both in their dresses, and one wedding breaking up while the other proceeds. The plot relies almost entirely on bad coincidences and seems to confirm the nation’s collective fear of the vengeful, irritable, prone-to-outbursts bride.
6. Made of Honor. Nothing more than a gender-swapped version of My Best Friend’s Wedding. This go around, the scenario seems unoriginal, which points to its flaws and lack of believability. Doctor Dreamy actor Patrick Dempsey plays Julia Robert’s role in this movie, as the best friend who suddenly realizes he is in love with the bride as soon as she announces her engagement. The role reversal is designed to reveal (a la Sweet Home Alabama) that the man can have it rough when it comes to cinematic weddings, and that it's not just women who can inspire weepy moments. Sorry Patrick, but we'd rather watch you perform brain surgery!
5. A Guy Thing. If you’ve ever seen a wedding movie made any time in the past several decades which is now airing in late-night reruns, you’ve probably witnessed the key premise to the plot of A Guy Thing. The groom-to-be Paul Coleman (Jason Lee) is about to get married to Karen Cooper (Selma Blair) but – gasp! – he wakes up after his bachelor party with another woman. (Bachelor parties in wedding movies rarely contribute anything original. For a notable and surprisingly heartwarming exception, see The Hangover.) Paul discovers that this woman he assumes he’s slept with, Becky Jackon (Julia Styles), is his fiance’s cousin! And he starts falling for her! A Guy Thing culminates in a wedding moment wherein both parties want to call it off due to outside attractions and viewers want to either fall asleep or go watch something original. Like The Hangover.
Coming up will be the top four movies featuring the four worst wedding moments recorded in movie history.
